Animal Justice Gets Momentum From Cherry

A Toronto-area animal rights group is getting a boost after supportive words from one of hockey's most famous personalities.

"Animal Justice" is trying to intervene in the OSPCA's proposal to euthanize 21 pit bulls in Tilbury. The pit bulls were rescued from an alleged dog fighting ring.

In a recent article with the Toronto Sun, Hockey Night In Canada's Don Cherry condemned the OSPCA's proposal. As a result, Animal Justice Executive Director Camille Labchuk says they've received an influx in support and donations.

"He said he can't imagine how these dog would feel thinking they're being rescued, then being sent to the gas chamber or euthanization instead," says Labchuk.

She adds her group is in the application process to intervene.

"We want to make sure the judge or justice in the court hears from us as animal advocates and lawyers with experience in animal matters, about why there are other options for the dogs besides having them put down."

The next court appearance regarding the OSPCA recommendation is March 10. Labchuck adds Animal Justice will have representation at the Chatham Courthouse that day.

Note Animal Justice has no affiliation with Bullies In Need, another group looking to save the Tilbury pit bulls.
