Canadian Census Needs An Update

Non-binary trans-activists and intersex people in Southwestern Ontario are calling for better representation in the Canadian census.

This year's version of the survey only gives two options when asking about gender or sex -- male or female -- but Volunteer at Windsor Pride Lorraine Sayell says not everyone identifies that way.

"One of the big reasons why there's such a lack of transgender, non-binary and intersex facilities, medical, etc., is due to the lack of information," Sayell explains.

The Canadian government currently estimates transgender populations based partly on the number of surgeries at gender reassignment clinics, but Sayell says not everyone can afford those procedures or are selected through OHIP.

Windsor Pride understands that the Liberal government only being in power since October may have affected them being able to make the change this time around, but it will continue to push for proper representation in the 2021 census.
