Pig Barn Fires "Routine" In North Huron

The North Huron Fire Department is trying to create awareness of the fire hazards in large pig barns.

Fire Cheif David Sparling reports that the North Huron Fire Department responds to a major pig barn fire every 18 months, with four since 2014..

Large scale pig barns housing thousands of animals often store manure in under flood pits for up to 12 months

And the use of plastics is popular throughout the building, meaning assorted gases can be released including methane and hydrogen sulfide.

The caustic environment reduces the integrity of electric wiring, and ventilation issues can increase the problem.

Compromised Electrical systems can ignite the methane.

High exposure can also be fatal to humans.

The farm building code was last updated 21 years ago, and may not reflect modern farm buildings.

North Huron has responded to four pig barn fire since March 2014.
