Potential Windsor-London Bid For World Juniors

Officials in London and Windsor are reviewing the possibility of a bid for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.

Tourism agencies in both cities are considering a request for proposals from Hockey Canada.

"We are reviewing the requirements and doing our due diligence," says Cheryl Finn, director of sport tourism for Tourism London.

Finn says a regional bid between the two cities is strongly being considered.

"Looking at the success of the junior hockey community with the Spitfires in Windsor as well as the success of our London Knights, we thought potentially that would be a good fit moving forward," says Finn.

She adds residents in the area should "stay tuned" and officials will do their "very best" in reviewing a potential bid, which Finn says needs to be in before the RFP deadline of August 31.

When asked for comment on a potential bid, the Office of Mayor for the City of London responded:

"We are a sports city through and through. Hockey is in our DNA. London would be a fantastic host city for the World Juniors. We've proven ourselves with past events like the Brier and the World Figure Skating Championships. Not only do we have the resources, but we have countless volunteers with a passion for sport, as does Windsor," says London Mayor Matt Brown.

A call to the mayor's office in Windsor has gone unreturned as of publishing.
