Look Out For Bears Further South

Black bears have been sighted in Lambton and Middlesex Counties, and there's a good chance they could make their way further down south to Chatham-Kent.

The remains of a bear cub were found near the Aamjinaang First Nation on Tuesday. On Friday, a small black bear was also killed in an accident in Middlesex.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTCVA) is aware of the issue. Manager of Conservation Lands and Services Randall Van Wagner says sightings in the area aren't uncommon.

"It sounds like the bear might have come down from the Bruce Peninsula area," says Van Wagner. "In the last few years there's been a sighting in London and another in Woodstock."

Van Wagner says bears are feeding this time of year, trying to put on pounds in the winter. The best advice he can give is to just leave them alone.

"Younger bears wander around looking for a range and food habitat. They just happened to head south, probably along the coastline of Lake Huron, and managed to make their way fairly far," says Van Wagner.

The bears could get a taste for garbage, but Van Wagner believes they'll most likely keep to area woodlots.
