The Chatham-Kent Animal Shelter will be receiving another helping hand by the municipality to go towards a new facility.
During Monday night's council meeting Councillor Derek Robertson presented the motion for council to invest $500,000 over the next two years into the CK Animal Shelter.
Robertson's motion did face one deputation, which was made by a local resident.
Arnott Friar approached council in saying he would rather see the money go towards repairs on roads and bridges.
His concerns on funding were not mirrored by council as they voted unanimously.
With consent from council, animal shelter supports celebrated with a loud applause.
Co-Chair of the Animal Shelter Fundraising Committee Marjorie Crew says she is very pleased with how the vote turned out.
"In the end [this is going to be] a municipally owned building," says Crew. "What I'm really proud of is this municipal and community partnership that's coming together."
Looking ahead to what the next steps are, Crew says they'll continue working on fundraising.
"We will be doing a campaign launch, [and] we're working on strategies ," says Crew. "Obviously, once we get to a certain point we'll be doing the design [for the new shelter]."
The project costs is estimated at about $1.5 million.
The municipality has already put money towards the project but Crew says now with this additional investment the shelter is a lot closer to reaching their goal.
