FINA Opening Ceremonies Kick Off World Championships In Windsor

The FINA Opening Ceremonies are set for tonight at the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor, kicking off the World Swimming Championships in the city.

Spokesperson Pam Mady says the night represents the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people.

"We're nervous, we're excited," says Mady. "This has been a long time planning, over a year now for most of the staff, so at this point we're excited because we've been waiting for this moment, but we're nervous because there's a lot on the line here."

The opening night production involves 200 performers and all of them are local.

Mady thinks those who attend will be blown away.

"This will be, we feel, the most unique presentation of an athlete introduction that's ever been done at any event. We think we're setting the bar here," says Mady.

The athletes are the focus of the show as Mady says their hard work in reaching the finals will be recognized.

"It's an homage to the athletes," says Mady. "The power, the drive, the passion, the work, the commitment that they have, so we're honouring them."

It's the first time for FINA to have opening ceremonies as a dedicated event.

"First day of competition is Tuesday. Opening ceremonies is theatrical; it's dance, music, it's patriotic. It honours all of the athletes, all of the countries," says Mady.

Doors open at 6pm on Monday. The show is set to get underway at 6:30pm.

The 13th FINA World Swimming Championships in Windsor are set to run from December 6 - 11.
