Various Maple Leaf breaded chicken products are being recalled over concerns they might be contaminated with a toxin produced by Staphylococcus bacteria.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the affected products, sold in Ontario and Quebec, include Maple Leaf Chicken Breast Strips and Sufra Halal and Mina Halal brand chicken burgers. The recalled strips were sold in 840 g packages with an expiry date of April 20, 2018. The recalled burgers were sold in 828 g packages with a best before date of January 1, 2018.
Food contaminated with Staphylococcus toxin may not look or smell spoiled and the toxin is not easily destroyed at normal cooking temperatures, according to the CFIA.
Symptoms most commonly associated with Staphylococcus poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and fever. So far, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the chicken.
Anyone who has a box of the chicken affected by this recall is advised to throw it out or return it to the store where it was purchased.
