CKHA Expands Specialist Clinics At Sydenham Campus

Hospital patients in Wallaceburg, Walpole Island, and South Lambton will soon have access to more specialized care, thanks to an expansion within the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA)

CKHA announced during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, that it will be adding a variety of new specialist clinics to its Sydenham Campus.

CKHA President and CEO Lori Marshall says this expansion of specialist clinics is a key investment of the

2017/2018 Recovery Plan, which aims to improve the organization's fiscal stability, while improving patient care.

Marshall says "care closer to home is always better."

The following clinics will begin booking patients this month:

  • Internal Medicine Clinic- Dr. Mahmud Rajabalee
  • Internal Medicine Clinic- Dr. Gemma Bain-Atoe
  • Respirology Clinic- Dr. Javaria Sohaib
  • Neurology Clinic- Dr. Awad Mortada
  • Pediatric Clinic- Dr. Abu Ismail
"When we talk about Chatham-Kent Health Alliance now, we talk about one team and two sites. What this demonstrates is that the physicians, [who] provide service across all of Chatham-Kent, are thinking about how it is that we can use both of our sites, in different ways, to be able to provide the care that's needed for our communities," explains Marshall.

CKHA Chief of Staff Dr. Pervez Faruqi says it is fitting for the hospital to introduce these new clinics, as more patients require specialized care.

"If you look at the demographics and the kind of medical issues and problems that are out there in the community with the aging population, it only made sense for us to bring respirology services here," says Faruqi.

Marshall says CKHA will continue looking at ways to expand and improve services in the future.

"What you'll see for both campuses in the future is very much a focus on expansion of ambulatory care and out-patient services. We do believe that the future of health care is less about beds and more about what can be done on the same day, day surgery, or out-patient ambulatory services. That's where we really want to invest," explains Marshall.
