Chatham-Kent police are warning homeowners not to pay for repairs that they haven't asked someone to complete.
Police said they had a report of someone posing as a home repairman in Chatham Wednesday.
According to officers, the man showed up at an elderly couple’s residence and asked to be paid for home repairs he completed Tuesday. Police said he claimed he replaced a roof vent Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m., adding that he fled on foot when the homeowners became suspicious and refused to pay him.
Officers described him as white male, approximately 5’10” with a stocky build and short brown hair.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service reminds residents to never hand over a cash deposit on the spot to anyone you don’t know, as con artists will take the money and run. They also advised homeowners get several estimates if repairs need to be done and research any company offering repairs before a contract is signed.
Police added no one should feel pressured to sign a contract and if a company insists on an immediate decision, they are probably not trustworthy.
