This weekend's forecast calls for a lot of splashing going on along the Lake Erie shoreline.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a watershed conditions statement for all day Saturday and Sunday morning, for the area of the Lake Erie shore that includes the municipality of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and the tip of Point Pelee, as well as the eastern shore of Pelee Island.
The forecast calls for rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 millimetres starting Saturday combined with sustained easterly wind speeds ranging from 25 to 35 kilometres per hour, with gusts in the 40 to 50 kilometres per hour range. Persistent light rain is also expected through Sunday with reduced wind speeds, according to ERCA watershed management services director Tim Byrne.
The high winds in the forecast, along with soil conditions and water levels, may increase the potential of flooding along watercourses and low-lying areas throughout the region, and near-shore erosion with water overtopping in the statement area.
