Boot camp looks to whip job seekers into shape

As the third annual CK Works! Community Job Fair approaches, members of the local Workforce Planning Board want to make sure job seekers feel prepared and confident.

The annual job fair is scheduled to take place on October 1 at the John D Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Kristy Jacobs, project manager with the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board, had previously told Blackburn News that they were aiming to have up to 70 employers at the event that are looking to hire local residents. In the past, job opportunities have ranged in a variety of sectors, from customer service, construction, the food industry, and health care.

As hundreds of people are expected to submit applications, some job fair boot camp workshops have been organized in an effort to help applicants stand out for potential employers.

“[Job fairs] are becoming a job search staple, but that doesn’t mean that they are comfortable and easy to navigate," said Jacobs in a statement. "Employers at previous fairs shared a list of suggestions with us, and one of them was to help job seekers feel more confident with the job fair format."

The job fair boot camps will take place the third week of September in Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, and Blenheim.

Residents interested in taking advantage of the workshop are asked to register ahead of time by calling the Employment Resource Centre at (519) 436-1123 or email CKERC@chatham-kent.ca.

Job fair boot camp workshops: Chatham - St. Clair College, September 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and September 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wallaceburg - St. Clair College Employment Centre, September 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tilbury - Tilbury Municipal Service Centre, September 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Blenheim - Blenheim Municipal Service Centre, September 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
