The Conservative Party of Canada has announced the starting date of its 2020 Leadership election.
The 2020 Leadership race will officially open on Monday. Candidates will have until the end of February to apply.
The Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) has also set the rules governing the election, including candidate requirements and fees, which can be found on the Conservatives' website.
“This is going to be an exciting and competitive contest that shows Canadians how Conservatives are ready to do the hard-work that comes with being a government in waiting,” said Lisa Raitt, Co-Chair of LEOC, in a media release. “Like all Conservatives, I’m looking forward to hearing the candidates’ vision for Canada, hearing those big ideas that get people talking about the Conservative Party, and hearing how each candidate is going to help us win the next election. I believe the process as structured by our LEOC will help accomplish that.”
Canadians wishing to vote must be a member of the Conservative Party by April 17, 2020.
Current Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer announced his intention to resign his position on December 12, stating publicly that it was for family reasons.
Scheer will continue as the leader until a replacement is chosen.
The new leader will be announced in Toronto on June 27, 2020.
