The 'butt' stops here

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is encouraging smokers to use National Non-Smoking Week as a starting point to quit.

National Non-Smoking Week is an annual initiative that runs from January 19 until January 25. Health units across southwestern Ontario are using this as an opportunity to share inspiring stories from people who have quit smoking.

"Chatham-Kent Public Health wants community members to know that support is available and they are not alone in their journey to quit smoking," read a media release.

As an incentive towards young adults, Health Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society has launched the Ultimate Break it Off Challenge. The contest is open to those between the ages of 18 and 29-years-old and is open until February 6. Draws for cash prizes ($1,000, $500, and $250) will take place on March 20.

In the meantime, there are local supports available for residents in Chatham-Kent who are interested in quitting smoking. The best way to find what works best for each individual would be to reach out to the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit directly at ckphu.com or (519) 352-7270 ext. 2417. Other avenues also include:

  • Call a quit coach at 1-866-797-000 through Telehealth’s quit smoking program
  • Join Smokers’ Helpline online community
  • Text iQuit to 123456 for texting support
