Ontario licence plates getting a do-over

As of March 4, the current white on blue Ontario licence plate will no longer be available.

The Ontario government and 3M Canada have a plan to replace them after police raised concerns the plates were impossible to read at night. Some cities also raised concerns the letters and numbers are not visible to red-light cameras. Friday, the Ontario government issued a statement reading, "the concerns have been taken seriously, and both parties have put a plan in place to deliver a new enhanced licence plate."

Law enforcement officials and key stakeholders are testing the new plates.

Starting March 5, the old white embossed licence plates will be reissued temporarily. Once that supply is exhausted, Service Ontario will begin issuing the new plates. The distribution will start the week of March 16.

For those who have the faulty plate, the government said it is working on a replacement plan, and everyone affected will get a notice in the mail.

"The government is pleased to have reached a resolution in this matter at no cost to Ontario taxpayers," the release said.
