A COVID-19 testing centre will open at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation this week.
Chief Jason Henry said individuals at the Wiidsemshin Assisted Living Facility will be tested Monday and then the clinic will be set up at the Kettle Point Health Centre on Indian Lane.
"We've had three confirmed cases at Kettle and Stony Point, but our local health practitioners have let us know that there's likely more people with the virus that have not been tested," said Henry.
He said the testing centre will help limit exposure among the on-reserve population of 1,000 to 1,200.
"If we become symptomatic or are suspected that we may have the virus, we have to go into the epicentre in Lambton County in Sarnia to get that testing. That becomes an issue because not everybody has their own mode of transportation. So, then you have to get a ride, borrow a vehicle, and that could promote the spread of COVID-19 even further."
Henry said he believes the pandemic has helped the First Nation foster a positive relationship with Lambton Public Health that will last for decades to come.
"Many First Nations, including ours, have multiple generations of families living under one roof, so it's really important that we take all measures possible to ensure the health and safety of our community."
The clinic, by referral and appointment only, will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Henry said his COVID-19 test came back Wednesday and was negative.
He was tested last week after showing cold-like symptoms.
