More Ontario businesses reopening a 'progressive step forward', Bradley

Sarnia's mayor calls the provincial government's announcement on the reopening of additional workplaces a progressive step forward.

Mike Bradley said most of the activities being allowed are outdoor activities.

"I think it's small steps, we have a long way to go," said Bradley. "I think the real challenge is going to be when we get into retail and restaurants in a big way, and how can we do that safely."

Premier Doug Ford announced Thursday afternoon that additional seasonal services and activities will be permitted to open as early as Saturday May 16, at 12:01 a.m., in time for the Victoria Day long weekend.

He also announced that as of Tuesday, May 19 at 12:01 a.m. certain retailers, seasonal businesses and health and community service providers will be allowed to open or expand their services.

Further details of the provincial government announcement can be seen here.

Mayor Bradley said he was disappointed there wasn't more information on the possible reopening of schools so parents and students can plan ahead.

The province indicated it will be providing an update on school closures and child care early next week.

Bradley said any reopenings have to be done safely because the COVID-19 caseload continues to grow in Sarnia and the province and that the worst thing that could happen is that we have to retreat back to March when the emergency was first declared.

"They just have to use common sense, keep people away, keep that distancing, I know it's a challenge especially in the retail environment but it can be done," he said. "We really do need to make sure those local businesses get up and running again and that we support them when they do."
