COVID-19 funding for Indigenous living off-reserve and in urban centres

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced another $75 million to support Canada's First Nations, Inuit, and Metis populations who do not live on reserves.

The money will go to Indigenous organizations that are addressing the critical needs of the community. That includes food security, sanitation, personal protective equipment, transportation, or educational material for children and youth.

"COVID-19 is having unique impacts on First Nations, Inuit, and Metis across our country. For Indigenous peoples living off-reserve, in urban centres, or separated from their communities, it can be even more challenging to access the help they need," said Trudeau.

Funding for the projects will roll out in the coming weeks.

Thursday's announcement is on top of the $305 million Indigenous Community Support Fund introduced last March. It included $15 million for Indigenous living in cities and off-reserve. $215 million went to each First Nation based on remoteness, community well-being and population. $45 million was earmarked for the Inuit, and $30 million went to Metis Nation communities.
