Individuals to be screened entering Walpole Island

Walpole Island First Nation has announced that a security checkpoint will be enforced 24/7 at its bridge entrance starting Friday.

Chief Executive Officer James Jenkins said all individuals accessing the territory will be screened.

"Respectful cooperation with our trained security officers is requested from not only visitors but also our community members," said Jenkins. "Illicit drugs and criminal activity will not be tolerated in our territory and monitoring traffic at our bridge is the first step to secure our nation."

Jenkins said identification will be required at the checkpoint and visitors must state the purpose of their trip.

He added that access to the beaches, marshes, parks and dump is also being reserved for community members only.

Jenkins said violators will face charges and fines.

The measure is part of a state of emergency declared by the First Nation in July in response to a rising number of drug overdoses and deaths.
