Animated holiday tree will light up Downtown Chatham

Downtown Chatham is about to get a little bit brighter Thursday night.

The Historic Downtown Chatham BIA is set to turn on the power for a Lighted Christmas Tree display on the Capitol Theatre Balcony (237 King Street West) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Connie Beneteau with the BIA said the plan was for the display supposed to be lit up already, but the project was delayed by COVID-19 and shipping issues.

"Like everything else, our supplies were stuck on a barge somewhere, but we're still hoping to get something up before the end of the year," said Beneteau.

She said the plan for this year is to have one twelve-foot tree, which is completely made up of lights, up on display, adding that the tree is programmable and animated.

Beneteau said that the plan for next year is to have two of the twelve-foot Christmas Trees up on the balcony and that they will programmed to "talk" to each other.

The displays are part of the BIA's Light-Up Downtown and Light-Up CK event, and the project is being paid for by a grant from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

Beneteau said they are hoping to keep this year's display up for about two weeks before taking it down.
