For decades, the YMCA has helped build healthy communities. Now, it will offer families coping with a cancer diagnosis for their child.
It has partnered with Childcan, a foundation that supports children with cancer by offering their families social programs. It also funds research to improve treatments.
Those families will be able to access programs and services at the Y at a discounted rate.
"As you can imagine, facing a diagnosis of cancer in your child is emotionally devastating. The journey is long and hard, and it is critical that parents and families look after their mental and physical wellness throughout," said Childcan Executive Director Kathleen Barnard.
About 100 children in Southwestern Ontario receive a cancer diagnosis or relapse each year. Childcan's programs support their families throughout the process from diagnosis to treatment to recovery or bereavement.
"Being able to participate in wellness programs like those offered through the Y will have direct mental and physical health benefits for Childcan families," said CEO of YMCA Southwestern Ontario, Andrew Lockie.
