Victoria Day Monday is not only a treasured holiday but it's also opening day at Dresden Raceway.
Spokesperson and track announcer Gary Patterson said seven races will kick off the season on Monday, which is expected to be filled with great horses and races.
There were to be 11 races but Patterson said unfortunately they had to be scaled back to seven because of a shortage of horses across Ontario due to winter tracks still open to finish their season and summer tracks starting up.
"It's always good to open up and get the season going. We have seven races on Monday. Race Secretary Ian Fleming did an amazing job to get together seven races because we have a shortage of racehorses in Ontario," said Patterson.
Patterson said a new high definition tote board will bring 150 years of racing into 2022 to allow fans to enjoy every aspect of the races up close and personal.
"Dresden Raceway, it's all about tradition and family fun. Come on out and spend the day at the track, it's only going to be a few hours. Spend time with the family and be around the horses. The history and tradition of Dresden Raceway are so rich," he said.
There will also be plenty of giveaways and draws on Monday. Patterson said Dresden Raceway will have a different event planned for each race day, including the fan favourite Derby Hat Day set for the opener on Monday. Patrons are asked to wear their fanciest hat to the track for an opportunity to win great prizes.
Fans can also enjoy the races in the fully licensed open grandstand with family and friends.
"The family aspect of the sport and the tradition is what makes Dresden Raceway special as generations of families return to the track every year," said Patterson.
Doors open at noon on Monday with post time for the first race set for 1 p.m.
