Suspended driver accused of speeding away from police before crash

It wasn't your typical Sunday afternoon drive.

A 53-year-old Chatham man who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel in the first place is facing a handful of driving-related charges after a high speed police pursuit at around 1 p.m. Sunday that ended with a foot chase.

Elgin County OPP with the Chatham Detachment started their chase after they allegedly recorded a stolen vehicle going more than 70 kilometres per hour over the posted 90 km/h speed limit on Queens Line.

Police said while they were trying to stop the driver, he allegedly crashed the vehicle into a guard rail and then took off running.

Officers were able to arrest him after a "brief foot pursuit" and took him into custody without any further incident.

A 53-year-old Chatham man was charged with two counts of driving while suspended, one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of stunt driving.

He is set to appear in court on June 26 to answer to the charges.

Police are still appealing to the public for tips in the case as well, so if you know anything that could help with the investigation, you are asked to call Elgin OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

You can also submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and may be eligible for a cash reward.
