LTVCA urges caution around waterways

Wet ground and wet weather could see localized flooding in low-lying areas and dangerous conditions around rivers, ditches, and streams.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a watershed condition statement on Monday, lasting until Sunday, January 14.

On Tuesday, forecasts are calling for 20-35 millimetres of rain in the region. While most of the lower Thames watershed is snow-free, recent wet conditions have soaked the ground. As a result, the LTVCA believes the watershed will respond quickly to the rain.

Residents could see areas of standing water and localized flooding in addition to the increased water levels in streams and the Thames River.

Only very low-lying areas next to the river are expected to see any flooding.

People are advised to take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams as the combination of slippery banks, and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous. Children, pets, and livestock should also be kept away from the water.

The LTVCA will continue to monitor the situation and will update the public as needed.
