Kangaroo safe and sound after escaping from Chatham-Kent zoo

A kangaroo that escaped from a local private zoo has been rounded up and returned safely.

Chatham-Kent police said the kangaroo was seen hopping around Reeder's Line in Howard Township on Tuesday on a "short-lived adventure" after making a "daring escape" from Greenview Park and Zoo on Talbot Trail.

The zoo is about 10 kilometres away from where the animal was found.

Police said staff members quickly rounded up the little "Roo" and returned it.

Lexi Prochnicki took the photos and told CK News Today she first thought it was a deer when she spotted the animal.

"I was driving along on Kenesserie Road and at first I thought it was a deer because I see a lot of deer on my route and I realized deer don't have front arms. So, I slammed on the brakes and backed up and realized oh, my goodness there's a kangaroo in the ditch," said Prochnicki.

Prochnicki said she wasn't scared to take the photos of the marsupial because she had backup.

"There was another car there, some young student I think and she had already called the zoo. There was a police officer that pulled up not long after me. And it was happy [the kangaroo], like it seemed content. I figure because it's at the zoo, it's used to people standing around staring at it, right," she said.
