Toyota Canada issues 'do not drive' notice for 7,300 vehicles

A lingering problem with airbags has resulted in an automaker sending notices to thousands of its Canadian customers.

Toyota Canada announced Tuesday that it was sending out 7,300 "do not drive" notices due to faulty Takata airbag inflators.

"The campaign is not a new recall, but is a recent step as part of the Takata recall from almost a decade ago in the hope to reach those who have not yet reacted," said Toyota Canada spokesperson Philippe Crowe. "The 'do not drive' advisory is being sent to owners of vehicles who have not, after many communications attempts, had the recall procedure done on their vehicle."

For Canadian Toyota owners, the do not drive notice covers about 5,000 Corollas from model years 2003 and 2004, 1,600 Matrixes from 2003 and 2004, and 700 RAV-4s from the 2004 to 2005 model years.

If you own one of these vehicles and have not had the issue resolved, Toyota Canada urges you to make an appointment at a dealership to correct the problem at no charge.

To check if your vehicle is on the do-not-drive notice list, visit the official Toyota Canada website.

Millions of vehicles with Takata airbags have been recalled due to explosions caused by prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said some of these explosions have resulted in injuries and deaths.
