A brand of baby cereal sold across the country is being recalled over concerns it may be contaminated with Cronobacter - a germ that can live in dry foods.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the recall for Baby Gourmet Foods banana raisin oatmeal organic whole grain cereal after it tested positive for the bacteria. The affected product was sold in 227 gram packages and has a best before date of April 3, 2025.
The agency noted that food contaminated with Cronobacter may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick.
"In rare cases, it can cause serious or fatal infections," the agency said in a statement. "Cronobacter can cause rare bloodstream and central nervous system infections and has been associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), especially in newborns."
To-date, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the recalled cereal.
Anyone who has the affected product should not consume it or feed it to their child. Instead, it should be thrown out or returned to the store where it was purchased.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other Baby Gourmet or Little Gourmet products.
