Josiah Henson Museum in Dresden to host free event

Emancipation Day celebrations are coming to Dresden this weekend.

The free event is set for Saturday, July 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History.

"Everyone is welcome," said museum attendant Erika Galbraith. "There will be a couple guest performances, and live speakers. And there will also be two food trucks with food available for purchase."

Emancipation Day is an annual celebration of hope and freedom to commemorate the end of slavery in the British Empire. Galbraith hopes everyone comes out to see the community they have built.

"A lot of people come from the United States and other areas in Canada to come visit us, and show their appreciation," added Galbraith.

There will be music, presenters, children's crafts, and food.

"I'm looking forward to the Blackburn Brothers," said Galbraith. "I've heard a few of their songs, they have a CD out as well. So I've heard everything and I'm really impressed so far, so I'm really excited."

The lineup of performers includes:

  • Awakened Voices Narratives

  • Robert Ball

  • Blackburn Brothers

  • YVNG JRIP

  • Dwayne Morgan

  • Babarinde Williams
