Various models of Fisher-Price baby swings that have been linked to the death of five infants are being recalled.
Health Canada issued the joint recall with Mattel, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Mexico’s Consumer Protection Federal Agency on Thursday. The agencies are urging people who purchased Fisher-Price Snuga Swings to stop using them immediately because of a suffocation hazard.
The affected models include the My Little Snugabunny Swing, My Little Snugabear Cradle 'n Swing, My Little Snugabear Ballerina Cradle 'n Swing, Moonlight Meadow Swing, Sweet Snugapuppy Swing, Fawn Meadows Deluxe Swing, Peek-a-boo Fox Swing, Dots & Spots Puppy Swing, My Little Snugabunny Cradle ‘n Swing, My Little Sweetie Deluxe Cradle ‘n Swing, My Little SnugaMonkey Cradle ‘n Swing, and My Little Snugapuppy Cradle 'n Swing.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Fisher-Price Snuga Swing and remove the headrest (by cutting the tether) and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the product," Health Canada said.
The five reported deaths occurred when the swing was being used for sleeping.
"The swing should never be used for sleep and bedding materials should never be added to it," Health Canada advised. "If the product is used for sleep or bedding material is added, the headrest and body support insert on the seat pad can increase the risk of suffocation."
According to Mattel, roughly 99,000 of the recalled swings were sold in Canada between 2012 and 2022.
Those who purchased the affected product can contact Mattel to receive a partial refund for the headrest and body support insert.
