Firefighters will be visiting neighbourhoods across the Municipality of Chatham-Kent this weekend to ensure homes have proper smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
CHiRP Day in CK will take place on Saturday with crews from all 19 fire stations going door-to-door to ensure everyone has the right equipment, that it's working, and set up properly.
"People can sign up for checks any time of the year but we like to take a day in October, Fire Prevention Month, to canvas neighbourhoods," said Whitney Burk, a community safety officer with Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue.
While it's not a 100 per cent guarantee, firefighters will try to provide alarms for those without them or those who need new ones. There's also no punishment for those caught without working alarms.
"You are technically breaking the law... but we use [the day] as education," Burk added.
Each visit is expected to take between 10 to 15 minutes.
