CK residents to tackle physical challenge to support veterans, first responders

Several people across Chatham-Kent will be pushing their bodies to the limit for a good cause.

The 2nd annual Chatham-Kent Rucksack March For Remembrance will happen this Saturday at Kingston Park in Chatham.

Those taking part will be walking 22 kilometres in support of Wounded Warriors Canada, a non-profit organization that provides mental health support for veterans and first responders.

It'll be a much tougher challenge than some may think as the walkers will also be carrying a 50 pound backpack.

"The best thing I've told people... you take that bag of topsoil that you carry to the car in the summertime, throw it on your shoulder and you carry it for four and half hours," said Dean Outhouse, one of the event's co-organizers.

Chatham is one of seven cities across Canada hosting its own March for Remembrance. The others are Windsor, Edmonton, Halifax, Peterborough, North Bay, and Bolton.

Last year, members of the CK Police Service raised over $4,000 for Wounded Warriors Canada, the most across Canada. They'll be taking part again with hopes of raising the most in back-to-back years.

So far, those participating in the Chatham event have raised over $12,000, which is already more than the roughly $10,000 collected in 2023.

"When it comes to events and things like this, people always seem to come through when we need it the most," added Outhouse.

Those interested in taking part can register online.

The event will get underway on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
