Provincial government to extend gas tax cut to June 2025

Ontarians are likely to continue paying 5.7 cents less per litre for gas until next summer.

Premier Doug Ford announced in Etobicoke on Sunday the provincial government will be introducing legislation that would extend the temporary gas tax cut until June 30, 2025. That would keep the tax at nine cents a litre.

The proposed legislation also applies to the price of diesel fuel.

Ford said the continued cut to the gas tax is just one way the province is working to help Ontarians keep more of "their hard-earned money."

The provincial government first slashed the rate on July 1, 2022, lowering the price of gas by 5.7-cents a litre and the cost of diesel by 5.3-cents a litre. Since then the gas tax cut has been extended multiple times with this being the fourth.

“Rising costs over the past few years have put a strain on household budgets, which is why we’ve taken action to offer relief where we can, including at the pumps,” Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy said in a statement.

According to provincial officials, the extended tax cut over the three years saves Ontario households an average of $380.

The continued tax rate cut applies only to unleaded gasoline and diesel and does not include rate reductions for leaded gasoline, propane, or aviation fuel.
