It's the last week before Christmas and the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent is working hard to make up a donation shortfall this Christmas season.
Major Larry Bridger with the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries said total donations stand at $349,469 as of Tuesday, down by $50,732 from last year.
Major Bridger noted general donations are at $210,415, down by $59,032 from last year, but kettle donations stand at $139,054, up by $8,300 from 2023.
He said donations have taken a big hit because of the month long Canada Post strike, but hopes to get a big boost this week.
"We believe general donations are down due to the Canada Post strike and our kettles are up because of it. We have noticed quite a few more cheques in kettles this year than last year," Major Bridger said. "With the strike over, we're hoping that those donations that were caught up in the mail will be delivered now and other people can mail their donations. So, that'll be great. It's great news for us."
The goal is to reach $550,000 this campaign and the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent is 63.5 per cent of the way there with only one week left.
The Major wants to remind the public that the red kettles are out and accepting donations until Christmas Eve at 2 p.m.
The kettles in Chatham are located at Walmart, Superstore, Food Basics, Giant Tiger, Sobeys, and No Frills. In Wallaceburg, they are at Walmart and No Frills.
The Salvation Army said donations will help "restore hope and dignity" to vulnerable and marginalized people.
Major Bridger said 1,053 households have signed up for Christmas assistance this year and 836 children will be receiving toys this Christmas. Major said those numbers are lower than last year, which was a record year for assistance.
Donations can be dropped in any kettle or you can use debit and credit with tap. Donations can also be dropped off at any Salvation Army location throughout Chatham-Kent, mailed to 46 Orangewood Blvd. in Chatham, ON N7L 5H1, or donated online by clicking here. All donations over $10 are eligible for a tax receipt.
All funds raised will remain in Chatham-Kent to help those in need throughout the year. The Salvation Army provides food assistance, housing support, and help to pay for utilities.
