CK PUC to hold public meeting about water and wastewater costs

Chatham-Kent residents who want a say on the future of their water and wastewater bills have one more chance to be heard.

The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) will host a virtual meeting at 3 p.m. on January 16.

During the meeting, the municipality will submit a revision to the Water and Wastewater Rates By-law to amend certain fees.

Darren Galbraith the General Manager of the CK PUC confirmed that users will pay an additional $1 per month in 2025.

"This is due to meter reading costs," he said.

The study that the rate increases are based on was completed in October and shows that the municipality needs to spend $1.2 billion on water and wastewater capital projects over the next 10 years. This is to replace aging infrastructure and maintain existing infrastructure while accommodating moderate growth.

Projections for 2034, show total annual bills for residential water and wastewater users nearly doubling from 2024, increasing to $1,156 per year for water and $1,199 per year for wastewater.
