Youth Arrested for Fake Bomb Threat, Breaching Release Conditions

A 15-year-old male has been charged with public mischief after falsely claiming there was a bomb onboard a Via Rail train on New Year's Day.

Chatham-Kent police said an anonymous 9-1-1 call came in on Wednesday night just before 9 p.m. reporting that there was a bomb in one of the rail cars.

Emergency Communications Operators established that the caller was on a westbound passenger train heading towards Chatham.

According to police, the train was stopped near Sass Road and Colborne Street before arriving at the Queen Street Station and was boarded by officers, who then located the 15-year-old caller along with three other youth with him ranging from 13 to 16 years of age.

"Through investigation, police determined that the bomb threat had actually been fabricated and called-in by the youth as a joke," reported police.

The teen was charged and arrested for public mischief.

The suspect and two other companions were also charged with breaching release conditions banning them from associating with each other.

"Police would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and that there is no current threat to public safety," police said.
