CK councillor wants review of budget to find savings to help blunt tariff impact

Supports could be on the way for people in Chatham-Kent affected by the ongoing trade war.

Councillor Alysson Storey wants the municipality's administration to review all spending of at least $200,000 to see if it can be delayed or permanently stopped.

Along with saving the municipality money, she believes some of these funds could be used to help anyone directly affected by tariffs. This could include tax breaks and supports for businesses.

Storey told CK News Today this would result in a lot of tough but necessary decisions.

"We're facing potential economic annihilation and that's not something I'm comfortable with, sitting back with a wait and see attitude," she said.

If approved, the plan would be to stop or delay "nice to do" projects and not ones deemed necessary.

Whether or not the rest of council agrees with this idea, Storey believes they need to do something to limit the impact on the local economy.

"We have limited tools but I think we have some and I think we need to look at them," she added.

Storey also explained around 8,300 jobs in CK are directly tied to U.S. demand. She explained she got this number from Ryan Donally, the president and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Chamber of Commerce, who spoke last month at the CK Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting.

"We want our community to be healthy, we don't want to see that kind of job loss in Chatham-Kent," she said.

Storey's idea will be discussed at the May 12 council meeting.

She explained she didn't want to discuss it at the next meeting since it's scheduled to happen the same night as the federal election. Storey also wants to give the new federal government time to introduce country-wide supports for those impacted by the trade war.
