UPDATE: Walpole Island firefighters battling large marsh fire

The Walpole Island Fire Department is asking for cooperation from the public as it continues to battle some blazes that are burning on the First Nation.

A large blaze broke out on Squirrel Island on Sunday with smoke visible from as far away as Detroit.

"Our team is actively monitoring the situation while continuing to respond to emergency calls throughout the community," said the fire department in a Facebook post.

The exact cause of the fire is not known at this time and people are asked to stay away from the area.

The fire department issued a follow-up post on Facebook early Monday morning, urging anyone who witnesses someone deliberately setting fires to take photos and report the incident immediately to the appropriate authorities.

Officials are also warning that the open burns are destroying vital nesting grounds and natural habitats that wildlife depend on.

The fire department also responded to a marsh fire on Squirrel Island on Saturday and a separate fire call on Friday.
