Man walking across Ontario for homeless veterans arrives in CK

An Ontario veteran is walking from Windsor to Ottawa to raise awareness for homeless veterans.

Ken MacKay, the current Sergeant-at-Arms of the Port Dover Legion, started his 800 kilometre journey last week, and was in Chatham-Kent this week.

He told CK News Today he wanted to do something to help after getting tired of waiting for different levels of government to step up and help struggling veterans.

"I know guys and girls who have seen stuff and they're fighting a battle every day, they've already fought a battle and now they have to fought a battle every night," said MacKay.

He decided on an awareness walk since hiking is a big passion. MacKay originally had plans to take part in different hikes across Europe but ended up changing his mind.

"I don't know why but at 2:30 a.m. I thought, 'Why don't I do it in Ontario and do it for the homeless vets?'" he explained.

MacKay has partnered with the Homes for Heroes Foundation. He's hoping his walk with encourage people to donate to the non-profit, helping it create tiny home villages for veterans. As of April 29, over $28,000 had been raised.

He's personally not looking for any donations, instead asking Legions throughout his journey to help him find places to rest and recover. This is exactly what the Chatham Legion did as it booked a hotel room for MacKay to stay in.

Meanwhile, MacKay is currently walking around 25 km a day.

"I'm 65 so I can't push it that much," Mackay laughed.

The hope is he'll arrive in Ottawa on June 4.
