CK residents encouraged to be emergency-ready

Emergency Preparedness Week is underway and Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue is asking members of the public to be prepared to protect themselves in case of an emergency.

CK fire officials are asking the public to have a 72-hour emergency kit on hand with necessary items such as water, non-perishable food, can opener, first aid kit, matches or lighter, extra clothing, toilet paper, etc. to help people stay safe until emergency responders arrive.

CK Fire Chief Chris Case said the municipality has seen its fair share of emergencies lately such as flooding, blizzards, blackouts, explosions, and tornadoes and it's important to be ready.

"We've seen some emergencies in Chatham-Kent. We've seen Wheatley, we've seen the snow, we've seen the odd tornado. Just be prepared, so if it happens you can feel like a little more in control," said Chief Case.

An emergency plan is also recommended by emergency officials to save time and make real situations less stressful. The plan should include the following:

  • How to meet and contact others in your family

  • Escape routes from your home and neighbourhood

  • A safe place to meet

  • Your school and daycare emergency policies

  • Extra plans for children and people with special needs

  • What to do with pets

CK Alert is also available to keep up to date with emergency information, but Chatham-Kent residents must sign up for the free service to receive notifications.
