A Windsor-Essex agri-business has been fined after fire code violations were discovered.
The Municipality of Leamington reported that a greenhouse operation was fined $2,500 after a workers' bunkhouse was inspected. Numerous violations of the Ontario Fire Code were noted.
The violations included a failure to repair a damaged closure, failure to maintain smoke alarms, failure to repair carbon monoxide detectors in a timely manner, and failure to maintain the smoke alarm power supply in a proper condition.
"Fire and life safety devices are critical to protecting lives, especially in residential accommodations such as worker bunkhouses," said Leamington Fire Chief Don Williamson. "These devices are only effective when properly installed and maintained. Property owners have a legal and moral obligation to ensure the safety of those who live or work on their premises."
The fire department is using this inspection as a reminder to business owners that compliance with the fire code is not optional, and that working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential in saving lives during an emergency.
