CK boxer to compete at national tournament

A Chatham-Kent teen has earned a spot in a national boxing tournament.

Landen Willimot, 14, of the Kent Athletic Youth Organization (KAYO) Boxing Club took part in the Golden Gloves Provincial Championship this weekend in Windsor and won the gold medal in the 60-63 kg category.

He told CK News Today he was confident he'd get the win since he had previously fought and beaten his opponent.

"I was already in the mindset that I got this, I shouldn't be scared, he should be the one that's scared," he said.

His focus is now on competing at the Golden Gloves National Competition. It's scheduled for March 2026 in Calgary, Alberta.

While he remains confident, Willimot knows it'll be a tough task to win the gold.

"I have to work harder, I have to give 110 per cent," he added.

Floyd Porter, Willimot's coach and dad, only wants to see his son give it his all.

"Win, lose, or draw, as long as he gives 100 per cent I'm always going to be proud as a coach and a father," he explained.

Meanwhile, this was the second straight year Willimot won a gold medal at the Golden Gloves competition. He wasn't able to compete at the last national tournament due to his age.
