Chatham store reports multiple thefts in one day

A Chatham man faces a handful of charges after police said he was caught stealing from the same business twice in one day.

According to Chatham-Kent police, the first incident happened just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Police were told that a 29-year-old man entered a Wellington Street West store in Chatham and concealed a number of items.

Store staff reportedly told the man to leave, but he refused. Officials said that the suspect eventually left, without paying for the items he'd taken.

Police were able to confirm the man's identity with the use of video surveillance footage.

Investigators determined that the man had breached multiple court orders by showing up at the store, as he had previously been banned from going to the premises. He was also ordered by the court "to keep the peace and be of good behaviour," police said.

Just before 6 p.m. that same day, the suspect returned to the store and allegedly repeated his earlier behaviour.

Police caught up with the 29-year-old after the second theft was reported.

He was arrested and charged with nine offences, including two counts of theft under $5,000 and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.
