CK launches emergency communication upgrade

Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is up and running in Chatham-Kent.

The system is a major upgrade to Canada's emergency communication system that improves how residents connect with emergency services and ensures that first responders have access to the most modern and reliable network available.

"NG9-1-1 will make sure that when someone calls for help, our first responders receive the most accurate and up-to-date information possible so we can get there faster," said Chatham-Kent Police Chief Kirk Earley. "This technology is built around the needs of the people we serve."

According to the municipality, improvements Chatham-Kent residents will see include:

• Faster response times

• More precise caller location

• Better information to help responders prepare before they arrive

• Better coordination between Police, Fire, and EMS

• A safer, more connected community

Ontario's Solicitor General calls the upgrade a game-changer.

"Next Generation 9-1-1 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information which means a faster, more effective emergency response," he explained. "That's why we are proud to provide funding to Chatham-Kent for this new technology which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved and people across the city can count on emergency services when it matters most."

The Ontario government has provided close to $4 million, since 2022, to support Chatham-Kent's transition to NG9-1-1.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff thanked the province for the help in switching over to NG9-1-1 and described the investment as a reinforcement of the municipality's commitment to public safety.

"This upgrade is about giving our residents the confidence that when they need help, we have the best technology and tools to protect them," he said.

The introduction of NG9-1-1 does not affect how residents make or experience 9-1-1 calls. Anyone experiencing an emergency is reminded to dial 9-1-1 for help.
