LKDSB dispels rumours of school closure in Dresden over landfill

The Lambton-Kent District School Board (LKDSB) is clearing up some misinformation regarding Lambton Kent Composite School (LKCS) in Dresden.

Rumours had been circulating that the school board was discussing selling the building and moving to a new site due to the Dresden Landfill project.

In a statement, the LKDSB claimed this is not true.

"For more than 55 years, LKCS has been a cornerstone of the Dresden community, educating students from Dawn Euphemia Public School, Zone Township Central School, Thamesville Area Central School, Dresden Area Central School, and beyond. It’s a school where tradition meets excellence, and we’re proud of the incredible opportunities it provides for our students," read the statement.

It is true that discussions have taken place among LKDSB trustees regarding the Dresden Landfill project. Back in October, Trustee Angela Richards brought forward concerns about how close the project was to LKCS.

She believes the Ministry of Education would be hypocritical if it allowed the landfill to move forward since it recently told the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) it couldn't build a new school at a planned property due to ongoing activity at the GFL Regional Facility.

There were never talks about moving the school; instead, discussions focused on asking the province to relocate the landfill.

CK News Today has reached out to the Ministry of Education multiple times about the LKDSB's request, but has received no response.
