Sports Briefs - September 26, 2016

Three professional athletes died yesterday.

Golfing legend Arnold Palmer passed away in Pittsburgh from of complications from heart problems -- he was 87.

Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident -- the Cuban born ace was just 24.

And, Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks in died in a shooting incident at a Calgary nightclub.

Edwin Encarnacion drove in the winning run in the ninth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to beat the Yankees 4-3. The Blue Jays lead Baltimore by one-and-a-half games for the first A-L wild card berth.

Elsewhere -- the Tigers' wild-card hopes took a hit as the Royals hit four home runs in a 12-9 victory over Detroit.

Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones had a career high 205 yards and a touchdown, but Detroit lost 34-27 to the Green Bay Packers.

Meanwhile -- LeSean McCoy scored twice and the Bills picked off Carson Palmer four times as Buffalo beat Arizona 33-18.

And, the Cowboys beat the Chicago Bears 31-17 in the Sunday nighter.

Sweden fell 3-2 in overtime to Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey. The Europeans will now face Canada in the best-of-three final that starts tomorrow night.

New military crosswalk in Sarnia to be unveiled

As part of a partnership between the Sarnia Legion Branch 62 and City of Sarnia, an unveiling ceremony will be held at the corner of Christina Street and Wellington Street on Sunday, June 7, at 2 p.m.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
