Canada brings home bronze from FIBA Basketball World Cup

There's a new standard for basketball in Canada.

Canada is the third-best in the world heading into the Paris Olympics after defeating the USA in the bronze medal game at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Team Canada got off to a fast start against Team USA though a double-digit lead quickly dwindled.

The USA took the lead early in the second quarter, but at halftime, Canada was up 58-56.

An unsportsmanlike foul against the Americans allowed Canada to pull ahead by nine points, by the end of the third quarter.

After leading for most of the second half, Canada fell behind with 6:30 left in the fourth. The lead was exchanged several times in the last minutes of the game.

With 0.6 seconds left in the game Team USA tied it up at 111 points apiece. Canada had the ball, but a three-pointer by Kelly Olynyk was denied, sending the game to overtime.

Canada dominated the extra time, to win the game 127-118.

Dillon Brooks had one of his best-ever performances and took the game MVP prize. He also broke the all-time record for points scored in a game at the tournament with 39.

It's the first time a Canadian squad reached the semi-finals at the international tournament, let alone a medal game.

Germany will face Serbia for the gold medal.
