Canada to appeal FIFA's point deduction for women's soccer team

The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer are appealing FIFA's automatic deduction of six points from the Canadian women's soccer team's standing at the Paris Summer Olympic Games.

FIFA deducted six points from the women's soccer team following last week's drone scandal.

New Zealand complained the second time it spotted a drone flying over its team's practice.

Head coach Bev Priestman was removed from the team on Friday after new information came to light that drones had been used in the past to spy on opposing teams. An assistant coach and an independent analyst were sent home after the scandal broke.

"The appeal is based on the disproportionality of the sanction, which we believe unfairly punishes the athletes for actions they had no part in and goes beyond restoring fairness to the match against New Zealand," said the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer. "The appeal has been submitted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport's Ad Hoc Tribunal in Paris for the Olympic Games, which allows matters to be heard on an expedited basis during the Games."

Canada's Sports Minister, Carla Qualtrough, said the federal government is withholding some funding from the team. The funding is for salaries.
