The City of London and Downtown London have won a prestigious award for The Downtown Millennium Plan, created 15 years ago.
The Downtown Pinnacle Award in the Planning category was bestowed by the International Downtown Association (IDA) in Washington, D.C., at its 60th Trade Show. Among the city's many projects, London's Millennium was responsible for the creation of Budweiser Gardens, Covent Garden Market rebuild, Central Library (conversion of former Bay Store) and Forks of the Thames revitalization.
“The approval and subsequent execution of this plan transformed London’s downtown from a crumbling, unattractive and sketchy area to the thriving destination it is today.” Janette MacDonald of Downtown London said in the news release. “Council of the day must be congratulated for their vision and bold moves to make this plan happen.”
“The success of this plan lays a strong foundation for the Downtown Plan that will be coming back to Council in early 2015.” John Fleming, Chief City Planner. “ Downtown is the heart of the City and our calling card, we need continue to improve our downtown so that London is seen as one of the best mid - sized cities in the world. To attract the best and brightest we need to have a great downtown.
David Downey, IDA President and CEO says this award recognized work that sets a standard for best practise. “The Downtown Millennium Plan is a wonderful example for all cities to emulate.”
