The owner and operators of an illegal group home on Oxford St. are facing a slew of charges after fire ripped through the building last month, killing one man.
On November 3, fire crews were called to the three-storey walk-up after a blaze broke out in one of the apartments. Two people were taken to hospital, one later died.
The owner, Unilettings Ltd., now faces 11 charges. An additional nine charges have been laid against the director, Dharma Meetun, and six against the operator, Keith Charles.
The charges deal with failure to maintain smoke alarms, fire separation door closures and emergency lighting.
Fire officials condemned the building after the fire. It was being operated by an organization called "People Helping People."
Multiple people with disabilities, addictions and mental health issues were crammed into each apartment. The building was infested with cockroaches and poorly kept.
Maria Sleegers also faces charges in connection to two properties on Clarke Rd.
