While London and area are trapped under a frigid Arctic airmass, the Middlesex-London Health Unit has issued its first Cold Weather Alert of the new year.
The Elgin-St. Thomas Public Health Unit has also issued a Cold Weather Alert.
The alerts go into effect immediately and will stay in effect until Thursday, Jan 8, when the cold snap is expected to end.
The -20 windchills are severe enough to cause damage to expose skin and possibly lead to hypothermia, according to Iqbal Kalsi, Manager of Environmental Health. "Wearing a hat and gloves or mittens as well as dressing in layers are important strategies for beating the cold." Kalsi also advises limiting the amount of time you spend outdoors.
The Cold Weather Alert also advises shelters to expect more demand. Londoners can help by donating non-perishable food, blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing to The Men's Mission at 459 York St., The Salvation Army Centre of Hope at 281 Wellington St. or the Unity Project, 717 Dundas St.
